A transcriber, or &ldquo;writer&rdquo; listens to the lecture through a small lapel microphone that the professor wears. The student will provide the professor with the microphone. The writer transcribes everything the professor verbalizes, and this is displayed on the student&rsquo;s computer screen. This enables the student to have access to the lecture content visually in real time. The professor is always expected to face the class while speaking. Instructors are asked not to turn their back on the class for any reason. Disability Resources asks professors to use media that has already been captioned if possible. If the media that the professor wants to use are not captioned, they have access to the Usable Materials Center (UMC) for accessibility review and captioning. This accommodation means that a student will need to receive any printed items such as textbooks, class handouts, etc. in an alternative accessible format. An example of this may include converting a textbook to an electronic file so that a student who is blind may access the information with screen reading software. The student is responsible for submitting a request to Disability Resources for their items to be converted. This process can take up to four weeks and it is the student&rsquo;s responsibility to submit these requests in a timely manner.
