While not a complete list of every accommodation provided through Disability Resources, this glossary provides definitions for the most commonly used student accommodations. Math or foreign language substitutions, and housing accommodations are not included in this glossary.<\/p>\n
Students with this accommodation are given permission to leave class for a reasonably brief period of time to address any impacts of their disability that may arise during class. The professor will understand that the student’s breaks from class are related to their disability when this accommodation is listed on the accommodation letter. This is not an attendance accommodation and does not permit the student to leave for the remainder of class without returning. It also does not cover any missed assignments, activities, or participation points resulting from their break.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
Students with this accommodation are given permission by Disability Resources to audio record the professor’s lecture content. They are permitted to use a cell phone, digital audio recorder, Smart Pen, or other appropriate recording device. The accommodation results in a modification to a classroom policy prohibiting recordings of the class lecture.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
The accommodation provides the student with a real-time transcript of the lecture. A transcriber, or “writer” listens to the lecture through a small lapel microphone that the professor wears. The student will provide the professor with the microphone. The writer transcribes everything the professor verbalizes, and this is displayed on the student’s computer screen. This enables the student to have access to the lecture content visually in real time. The professor is always expected to face the class while speaking. Instructors are asked not to turn their back on the class for any reason. If it is necessary to turn their back in order to write on the blackboard, professors are asked to wait to lecture on that content until they are facing the class again.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
Students with an aide for the classroom or lab environments are provided a peer (or GA\/TA) aide to assist them with completing any number of manual or visual tasks. The aide is not required to teach the student class content. Payment for the aide’s services will be coordinated by Disability Resources.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

This accommodation requires a course-by-course analysis of course assignments, and a collaboration between Disability Resources staff and faculty to negotiate a reasonable modification to their late work policy. Limitations of the accommodation, agreed upon modifications to the assignment due dates, and instructor notification will be outlined in an Assignment Extension Agreement form. The student receives a copy of the approved agreement once the instructor communicates their approval in writing to Disability Resources staff, typically via email.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
This accommodation requires that all videos, short clips, movies, media, etc. be captioned so that students with sensory disabilities – such as students who are Deaf or hard of hearing – have equal access to that content. Disability Resources asks professors to use media that has already been captioned if possible. If the media that the professor wants to use are not captioned, they have access to the Usable Materials Center (UMC) for accessibility review and captioning. Requests for media to be made accessible should be submitted to the Usable Materials Center.<\/a> Requests should be submitted at least ten days in advance of the date needed.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This will be written in the following manner on the accommodation letter:<\/p>\n This accommodation requires a course-by-course analysis of the attendance requirements, and a collaboration between Disability Resources staff and faculty to negotiate a reasonable modification to their classroom attendance policy. Limitations of the accommodations, agreed upon modifications to the attendance policy, exam\/quiz make ups, methods for submitting assignments, assignment due dates, and instructor notification will be outlined in an Attendance Agreement form. The student receives a copy of the approved agreement once the instructor communicates their approval in writing to Disability Resources staff, typically via email.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n Students with a note taking accommodation are permitted to have access to a copy of the lecture notes. Students with this accommodation are allowed to record the lecture and given access to a professional notetaking service. The lecture recording is uploaded to the notetaking service, and students are provided a written lecture summary within 24 hours.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation provides permission for the student to choose their own seat when assigned seating is implemented by the instructor. Students who need to sit in a specific spot to mitigate impacts of their disability will do so independently, unless they require the professor’s assistance in making that seat available, whether by placing a reserved sign on the seat or by requesting that students do not take that seat.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation is a joint responsibility between the student, faculty and Disability Resources staff. This accommodation means that a student will need to receive any printed items such as textbooks, class handouts, etc. in an alternative accessible format. An example of this may include converting a textbook to an electronic file so that a student who is blind may access the information with screen reading software. The student is responsible for submitting a request to Disability Resources for their items to be converted. This process can take up to four weeks and it is the student’s responsibility to submit these requests in a timely manner. If the professor’s assistance is needed to secure the print items, Disability Resources will initiate a collaborative process for doing so.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n Sign language interpreting is available for students who are Deaf. Disability Resources contracts with an outside agency to hire interpreters for use during class lecture, campus events, group meetings, etc. The professor is always expected to face the class while speaking. Professors are asked to not turn their back on the class for any reason. If it is necessary to turn their back in order to write on the blackboard, professors are asked to wait to lecture on that content until they are facing the class again.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation allows the student to consume food or beverages during class due to impacts of their disability. It results in a modification to a classroom rule which may prohibit food and drinks.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation allows the student to give a required in-class presentation to the faculty member instead of to their peers. The student and the professor are responsible for establishing a mutually agreed upon date and time for completing the presentation. This accommodation does not modify the content of the presentation or the requirement to present their materials. If a professor believes that this accommodation will result in a fundamental alteration to an essential element of their course, they should contact Disability Resources directly for consultation.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n An FM system is a hearing assistive technology that helps reduce background noise by amplifying the professor’s voice. This accommodation requires the professor to wear a small lapel microphone during the entire class time. The student or Disability Resources will provide the professor with the microphone.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation permits the student to use their personal electronic device, such as a laptop or tablet, to type their lectures notes. This accommodation results in a modification to a classroom policy prohibiting the use of electronic devices during class time.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n This accommodation ensures that the student receives the exam in Braille format. It requires that Disability Resources and faculty proactively coordinate the delivery and conversion of exams and related print material to Braille. Disability Resources will contact the professor at the start of the semester if there is a student in their class who requires Braille.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation allows the student to receive the exam with magnified print.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation allows the student to have a live reader available during the test to read the exam questions out loud to them. The reader is trained to only read the exam questions out loud and is not intended to tutor or provide guidance. Readers may be recruited with assistance from the professor. When readers are required for math, engineering, science, or other highly technical courses where knowledge of the content is required to be an effective reader, Disability Resources will seek to recruit an individual who has taken the course and is familiar with the content.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation allows the student to have another individual present during the exam to scribe the responses that the student dictates. The scribe is trained to write only what the student directs them to and is not intended to tutor or provide guidance. Scribes are typically recruited with assistance from the professor. When scribes are required for math, engineering, science, or other highly technical courses where knowledge of the content is required to be an effective scribe, Disability Resources will seek to recruit an individual who has taken the course and is familiar with the content.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n This accommodation permits the student to use a note card with memory prompts specific to the math course they are taking. It should be limited to items such as formulas that the student may not be able to memorize due to the specific impacts of their condition. The size of the math help sheet is not specified because each student’s needs are unique to their disability. If the professor believes that this accommodation would fundamentally alter an essentially element of the course, they are expected to contact Disability Resources for consultation. The professor may also work with Disability Resources to determine appropriate limitations and parameters for using this particular accommodation.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n This accommodation permits students with print disabilities to use text-to-speech software during their exams and quizzes. Disability Resources typically uses Read and Write or Natural Reader to read aloud a digital format of the exam to the student. Instructors are expected to submit the exam to Disability Resources as an electronic text at the time that they receive notification that the student will be completing the assessment at the Disability Resources Testing Center. If the professor is unable to provide a copy of the exam digitally, they are expected to submit a hard copy to Disability Resources for conversion at least three days prior to the exam date. Statewide campus instructors are expected to work with students to locate a computer lab or office with a computer to ensure that the student is able to use the accommodation. Disability Resources is available for consultation about how to implement this accommodation on a statewide campus.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation permits the student to use a basic four function calculator on all math and math-related exams. If students in the class are permitted to use a calculator with advanced functions, this student is permitted to use that calculator and are not limited to the basic four function calculator. If performing basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) is an essential element of the course, the professor is expected to contact Disability Resources for consultation.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n A CCTV is an assistive technology device designed to magnify print materials. Students with this accommodation receive a print copy of the exam that they place under a video camera which magnifies the document to a level set by the student and displays the magnified exam on a screen. Statewide campus instructors are expected to work with students to locate a computer lab or office to ensure that the student is able to use the accommodation. Disability Resources is available for consultation about how to implement this accommodation on an statewide campus.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n JAWS is a screen reading software that provides a verbal description of visual images and computer content for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. This software also enables individuals to navigate the computer using keyboard commands instead of relying on the use of a mouse, which may not be feasible for an individual who is blind or visually impaired. Professors are expected to submit the exam to Disability Resources as an electronic text at the time they receive notification that the student will be completing the assessment at the Disability Resources Testing Center. If the professor is unable to provide a copy of the exam digitally, they are expected to submit a hard copy to Disability Resources for conversion at least three days prior to the exam date. Statewide campus instructors are expected to work with students to locate a computer lab or office with a computer to ensure that the student is able to use the accommodation. Disability Resources is available for consultation about how to implement this accommodation on an Statewide campus.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation permits the student to check the spelling of words during exams, quizzes, and tests when the correct spelling of terminology and vocabulary is a graded component. Students check the spelling of various words using a word processing document, or another acceptable method for ensuring the correct spelling of their content. It does not permit the student to check the definitions of these words.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n Students with this accommodation are permitted to use a computer to type their responses to essay-based or short-answer portions of an exam or quiz. This accommodation may modify the professor’s requirement that exam answers for essay or short-answer responses be written in a blue or green book.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation permits the student the use of Dragon Naturally Speaking to dictate their responses to exam questions instead of handwriting them. This is typically intended for essay-based or short-answer exam questions. The instructor is expected to administer a digital copy of the exam (Word document) since it will need to be loaded onto a computer for the student to use. Disability Resources is available to train students on the use of Dragon Naturally Speaking. The student will need to complete this training prior to their first use of Dragon on an exam because a profile unique to that student will need to be created. Statewide campus instructors are expected to work with students to locate a computer lab or office with a computer to ensure that the student is able to use the accommodation. Disability Resources is available for consultation about how to implement this accommodation on an statewide campus.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n This accommodation will typically list a specific break time that the student is to receive. The length of the break is determined through the interactive eligibility process and may list 5, 10, 15, or 20-minute breaks. There may be situations where a specific break time is not listed because of a student’s unique circumstances. This accommodation permits the student to exit the testing room for the period of the break to manage specific impacts of their disability. Their timer is to be paused for the duration of the break. They may not access any course materials during the break.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation ensures that the student takes their exam, quiz or test in an environment which typically has less distractions than the classroom setting. This is to be applied to all exams, quizzes, and tests. Flagstaff mountain students may take their exam in the Disability Resources Testing Center. Statewide campus students may work with their professor to coordinate a setting that limits the number and type of distractions a student may experience. This accommodation does not guarantee a distraction free test setting and it is not applicable to exams that do not require proctoring, such as take-home or certain online exams.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation means that the student’s testing time will be extended one and a half times the standard classroom testing time. This accommodation may be used for any timed exam, quiz, or test that is intended to be started and completed in one session. Flagstaff Mountain Campus students may take their exams in the Disability Resources Testing Center. Statewide campus students will coordinate the time and location for completing the exam with the professor. The professor is responsible for extending the student’s testing time for all online assessments immediately upon receiving the accommodation letter from Disability Resources.<\/p>\n Double time means that the student’s testing time will be doubled based on the standard classroom testing time. This accommodation may be used for any timed exam, quiz, or test that is intended to be started and completed in one session. Flagstaff Mountain Campus students may take their exams in the Disability Resources Testing Center. Statewide campus students will coordinate the time and location for completing the exam with the professor. The professor is responsible for extending the student’s testing time for all online assessments immediately upon receiving the accommodation letter from Disability Resources.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n This accommodation allows the student to consume food or beverages during the allotted exam time.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n Students with this accommodation are permitted to listen to music during any exam, quiz, or test, as long as the music is vetted to ensure that no academic material has been saved on the device that the music will be stored and played from. Flagstaff Mountain Campus students must have their music pre-approved at least one week prior to the date needed by the Disability Resources Testing Coordinator and can submit their music on a flash\/jump\/zip drive.
