The Student PIRGs are independent state-based student organizations that work to solve public interest problems related to:<\/p>\n

Our student-led board has set up campaigns around the major issues students will face when they graduate — from global warming to endangered species, from staggering student debt rates to high textbook costs, from the escalating cost and declining quality of health care to the plight of the hungry and homeless. Internships provide the opportunity to take education out of the classroom, to do hands-on work, to learn important skills, and to make a direct impact on public interest issues.<\/p>\n
With an internship with Arizona PIRG, you might work to:<\/p>\n

- strengthen our democracy by turning out students to vote<\/li>\n

Over the course of four weeks, you’ll learn how to recruit and manage other student volunteers, how to work with media, as well as how to work with other student groups and coalition partners. You’ll plan a large-scale campaign event that will take place during the third week of the internship.<\/p>\n

A guardian is a person appointed by Coconino County Superior Court to ensure that the personal and medical needs of an incapacitated person are met. Flagstaff Shelter Services (FSS) is a nonprofit grassroots agency serving homeless men and women in Flagstaff. Our mission is to ease the suffering of homeless men and women by providing shelter and services in a safe, supportive and caring environment and to assist them in overcoming the obstacles to obtaining permanent housing.<\/p>\n
Flagstaff Shelter Services operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, offering day services and overnight shelter. Interns will:<\/p>\n

- can cope and react effectively to crisis situations, including medical and psychiatric emergencies<\/li>\n
- can become familiar with the social services in the immediate area and be comfortable in referring our clients to the appropriate services<\/li>\n

Upward Bound Math and Science, within the Northern Arizona University Educational Support Programs Department, is a federally-funded program that brings high school students from the southwest to Northern Arizona University for an intensive summer residential program.<\/p>\n
The program provides an integrated and challenging college-prep program for low-income and first-generation high school students in the summer on the Northern Arizona University campus.<\/p>\n
The intern will gain skills on all levels of program coordination with an emphasis on human relations. This internship can be taken for course credit during the spring semester and has the potential to lead directly into a summer position on our senior staff including room, board, and a $1600-$1700 stipend.<\/p>\n

The mission of Girls on the Run of Northern Arizona is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. We fulfill our mission by offering curriculum-based, experiential, 10-week afterschool programs that use the power of running to give adolescent girls the tools to:<\/p>\n

Women volunteers from the community are trained to facilitate Girls on the Run® programs, serving as coaches and positive adult role models. Our goal is to empower girls to reach their full emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical potential. Our objective is to reduce pregnancies, eating disorders, depression, suicide attempts, substance abuse, unhealthy relationships, and confrontations with the juvenile justice system among the girls who participate in our programs.<\/p>\n
Internship opportunities with Girls on the Run are available during the fall and spring semesters for women who want to gain hands-on experience facilitating a 10-week prevention program for adolescent girls in Flagstaff, and develop their program coordination and community outreach skills. Special projects may also be developed based on the intern’s professional interests and goals.<\/p>\n

The CR program is an essential part of the Glendale Fire Department’s service to the citizens of Glendale and the West Valley. A crisis team of two responds with fire crews and PD, assisting those who are experiencing a 9-1-1 emergency. An emergency could be a house fire, unexpected death of a loved one, a car accident, drowning, homicide, mental illness, assault or suicide. Once on-scene, the crisis team works with fire crews and\/or police officers to provide citizens emotional support, resources, referrals to agencies or organizations, or transportation if needed. The CR program operates the same hours as firefighters; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.<\/p>\n
Duties<\/h5>\n
An intern’s roles within the CR program consist of staffing the CR van during shifts, providing crisis intervention to customers on scene of 911 emergencies, resources (such as water, blankets, and assisting with accessing community agencies for further assistance).<\/p>\n
All members of the CR program are responsible for checking the van off at the start of every shift, completing the daily chore(s), and be ready to respond to an incident at a moment’s notice<\/p>\n
Interns will be required to complete one 12-hour shift per week. Intern supervision will occur during the intern’s shift; the exact time may vary due to calls during the shift. Interns that are assigned to weekend shifts will be responsible for meeting with their field instructor during the work week (Monday-Friday).<\/p>\n
