Students work closely with trained PIRG staff to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>develop their leadership skills<\/li>\n<li>learn to successfully plan and organize winning campaigns<\/li>\n<li>get national media attention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Through the Arizona PIRG student internship program, you&rsquo;ll get involved in the issues that matter most to you, as well as learn a wide-range of organizing skills and tactics. Internships provide the opportunity to take education out of the classroom, to do hands-on work, to learn important skills, and to make a direct impact on public interest issues.<\/p>\n<p>With an internship with Arizona PIRG, you might work to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cut the costs of textbooks by educating faculty about cheaper alternatives<\/li>\n<li>strengthen our democracy by turning out students to vote<\/li>\n<li>end our country&rsquo;s addiction to oil by building support for mass transit and clean energy<\/li>\n<li>directly address local poverty issues by organizing a Hunger Clean Up fundraiser event<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over the course of four weeks, you&rsquo;ll learn how to recruit and manage other student volunteers, how to work with media, as well as how to work with other student groups and coalition partners. An emergency could be a house fire, unexpected death of a loved one, a car accident, drowning, homicide, mental illness, assault or suicide. Once on-scene, the crisis team works with fire crews and\/or police officers to provide citizens emotional support, resources, referrals to agencies or organizations, or transportation if needed. Those who wish to participate in the Crisis Response Team will need to complete an additional 20 hours of training in topics related to crisis response.<\/li>\n<li>All interns must be able to pass a criminal background check and obtain an AZ Fingerprint Clearance Card through the Department of Public Safety.<\/li>\n<li>All interns must be able to follow all VWS policies, including client confidentiality, the Intern Professionalism policy, and other policies that apply to the program (a hand book is available for interns).<\/li>\n<li>If the intern qualifies to be part of the crisis response team, they must have a valid drivers license, access to a safe vehicle for on call shifts, and proof of insurance.<\/li>\n<li>All interns may be asked to use a personal mobile device for office communication (not with clients!), including being able to access their agency email accounts and calendars.<\/li>\n<li>We prefer that advocacy interns be 21 years of age or older.
