He grew up on the Navajo Reservation and later graduated from Yale University and Columbia University. He has published two children\u2019s books, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/56638626-healer-of-the-water-monster\"><em>Healer of the Water Monster<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/62190985-heroes-of-the-water-monster\"><em>Heroes of the Water Monster<\/em>.<\/a> He also won many awards for his writing including the American Indian Youth Literature Award and Bank Street\u2019s Best Book of the Year. He has contributed to various short films, including <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/siMal6QVblE?si=VCves_UJSp-dyPt3\"><em>Ts\u00eddii N\u00e1\u00e1ts\u2019\u00ed\u00edlid \u2013 Rainbow Bird and A Conversation on Race with Native Americans<\/em><\/a>, and is currently working on a new book. He most recently contributed two short stories to in Cynthia Leitich Smith\u2019s anthology <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/53402104-ancestor-approved?from_search=true&amp;from_srp=true&amp;qid=VIHl1agDg7&amp;rank=1\">Ancestor Approved: Intertribal Stories for Kids<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Young\u2019s work aims to create the characters he wants to see in the media rather than focusing on the lack of Indigenous representation. He became an avid writer at a young age &#8211; starting with dinosaur adventures on the rez after watching <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amlitmag.com\/blog\/amlit\/2022\/04\/comparing-the-jurassic-park-novel-with-the-movie\">Jurassic Park<\/a>. <\/em><\/h4>\n<p>He and hopes that his own books will encourage children to fall in love with literature.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3048 size-uncropped-large\" src=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/department-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/343\/Ashurst-Bryan-Young-square-600x600.png\" alt=\"Brian Young to give author talk, headhot of smiling author, two book covers. Place and time duplicated below\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/343\/Ashurst-Bryan-Young-square-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/343\/Ashurst-Bryan-Young-square-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/343\/Ashurst-Bryan-Young-square-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/343\/Ashurst-Bryan-Young-square-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/343\/Ashurst-Bryan-Young-square-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/343\/Ashurst-Bryan-Young-square.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Young will lead a panel discussion on \u201cThe Power of Storytelling\u201d and answer questions from the community about his books on <a href=\"https:\/\/events.nau.edu\/event\/brian-young-panel-and-reading\/\">Friday, October 20 in Ashurst Auditorium starting at 4 PM.<\/a> The panel will bring to light the ways in which storytelling is integral to Native culture and explain how children\u2019s books should reflect that.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting writers of color who challenge outdated conventions can positively impact diversity in children\u2019s literature. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/childrens\/childrens-industry-news\/article\/92543-ccbc-releases-statistics-regarding-diversity-in-children-s-literature-published-in-2022.html\">Books written by BIPOC made up less than hal<\/a>f of published children\u2019s books in 2022, with Native characters representing only a tiny fraction of that percentage, which means Native children don\u2019t see much representation in literature.
