Other areas of interest for our students and faculty include:<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-15px not-in-view\">\n<div class='shortcode-column-container'><!-- shortcode-column -->\n<div class=\"shortcode-column shortcode-column--count-2\">\n    \n<ul>\n<li>Corpus linguistics<\/li>\n<li>English linguistics<\/li>\n<li>Linguistics skills<\/li>\n<li>Curriculum &amp; program evaluation<\/li>\n<li>Grammar and vocabulary<\/li>\n<li>Grammatical variation<\/li>\n<li>Language testing and assessment<\/li>\n<li>Pragmatics<\/li>\n<li>Psycholinguistics<\/li>\n<li>Research methods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n<!-- shortcode-column -->\n<div class=\"shortcode-column shortcode-column--count-2\">\n    \n<ul>\n<li>Register and discourse analysis<\/li>\n<li>Second language acquisition<\/li>\n<li>Second language listening and speaking<\/li>\n<li>Second language reading and writing<\/li>\n<li>Speech perception and production<\/li>\n<li>Spoken discourse<\/li>\n<li>World Englishes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Why pursue an Applied Linguistics doctorate at NAU?<\/h2>\n<h3>Personal faculty-student relationships<\/h3>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/department-english\/overview\/faculty-by-area\/\">faculty<\/a>\u00a0work closely with <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/nau.edu\/naugsaal\/students\">individual students<\/a>, helping them to develop as colleagues in applied linguistics.\u00a0 As a result, our Applied Linguistics PhD students\u00a0have an outstanding record of publication and participation in major conferences such as TESOL and AAAL. <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/department-english\/programs\/doctoral-degrees\/phd-applied-linguistics\/phds-in-english\/\">Graduates of our program<\/a> have also been highly successful at obtaining tenure-track faculty positions at major universities.<\/p>\n<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-15px not-in-view\">\n<p>Students also have the opportunity to work with our emeritus faculty: Doug Biber, Randi Reppen, Bill Grabe, Fredricka Stoller, Mary McGroarty, and Joan Jamieson.<\/p>\n<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-15px not-in-view\">\n<h3>Funding and tuition<\/h3>\n<p>PhD in Applied Linguistics students are eligible to teach English composition courses in the English Department. Furthermore, a limited number of tuition waivers are available to out-of-state or in-state students who can demonstrate financial need. More information on graduate teaching assistantships and tuition waivers is available on our &#8220;Graduate Assistantships&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/department-english\/resources\/graduate-assistantships\/\">page<\/a> under &#8220;Resources.&#8221; <hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-15px not-in-view\">\n<p>Non-academic graduate assistantships are available through many university-wide offices. They are awarded with stipends that vary by office, job duties, and degree-level. The NAU Office of Graduate and Professional Studies provides more information about <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/graduate-professional-studies\/graduate-assistantships-tuition-waivers\/\">&#8220;at-large&#8221; graduate assistantships<\/a>. <hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-15px not-in-view\">\n<h3>Outstanding research labs<\/h3>\n<p>Faculty and student research is supported by our three labs, the Corpus Research Lab, the Global Communications Center, and the Language and Memory Lab, as well as the Program in Intensive English (PIE), <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all of which assist students in developing their applied <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">linguistics skills<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-15px not-in-view\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Corpus Research Lab<\/h4>\n<p>Undergraduate, graduate, and visiting scholars actively participate in cutting-edge corpus research. The lab has an extensive collection of corpus holdings, some of which are only available to NAU researchers and visiting scholars. We also have a suite of corpus tools available. Using facilities in the speech lab, students have opportunities to analyze speech production and perception data, observe speech signals, and verify their effects on speech perception. The Global Communications Center is equipped with advanced speech acquisition and processing equipment and software. <hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-15px not-in-view\">\n<h4>Language and Memory Lab<\/h4>\n<p>The lab is equipped for chronometric, psychometric, and visual-world eye-tracking investigation of language learning and processing. Graduate students, undergraduate students, and visiting scholars can participate in ongoing projects or propose studies of their own. Our psycholinguistics and SLA courses and seminars serve as incubators for student projects. Historically, this research has resulted in numerous publications and presentations and has provided valuable evidence-based input into PIE\u2019s curriculum and assessment practices.
