Check out our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/APLNGandTESLatNAU\">Facebook page<\/a>\u00a0for the latest news and information on the Applied Linguistics and TESL programs.<\/p>\n<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-15px not-in-view\">Our Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language\u00a0degree combines a strong theoretical foundation in applied linguistics with practical training in the teaching of English to people who speak other native languages.<\/p>\n<p>The principal goals of the program are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>provide the linguistic theory necessary for ESL\/EFL teachers<\/li>\n<li>equip teachers with the practical skills needed for effective language teaching<\/li>\n<li>prepare students for further study in English language teaching, applied linguistics, and related fields<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Length of program<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The MA in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language program is a two-year course of study. Furthermore, a limited number of tuition waivers are available to out-of-state or in-state students who can demonstrate financial need. More information on graduate teaching assistantships and tuition waivers is available on our &#8220;Graduate Assistantships&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/department-english\/resources\/graduate-assistantships\/\">page<\/a> under &#8220;Resources.&#8221; <hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-15px not-in-view\">\n<p>Non-academic graduate assistantships are available through many university-wide offices. They are awarded with stipends that vary by office, job duties, and degree-level. The NAU Office of Graduate and Professional Studies provides more information about <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/graduate-professional-studies\/graduate-assistantships-tuition-waivers\/\">&#8220;at-large&#8221; graduate assistantships<\/a>. <hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-15px not-in-view\">\n<p>NAU&#8217;s MA in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language program is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiche.edu\/wrgp\">Western Regional Graduate Program<\/a> (WRGP), which allows residents of certain Western states and territories to pay in-state tuition. The eligible states and territories are: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. If you believe you meet these residency requirements, you may wish to consider petitioning to be recognized as an in-state student (more information <a href=\"http:\/\/www7.nau.edu\/academiccatalog\/2011\/introduction\/Financial_for_all\/ProcEstResidency.htm\">here<\/a>).<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-30px not-in-view\">\n<h2>Accelerated BA-MA program<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/department-english\/programs\/bachelors-degrees\/accelerated-ba-ma\/\">Accelerated BA English-<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/department-english\/programs\/bachelors-degrees\/accelerated-ba-ma\/\">MA Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language <\/a> (Teaching Track) allows students to get both a BA in English and an MA in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language degree in as few as five years. Please see the academic catalog for the most recent information regarding courses and academic plans.<\/p>\n<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-30px not-in-view\">\n<h2>Employment after Graduation<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Teaching abroad<\/strong>: Over 90 percent of our MA in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language graduates have obtained ESL\/EFL teaching positions. Graduates have taught in many countries, including Argentina, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Egypt, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Morocco, Namibia, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Uzbekistan.<\/p>\n<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-30px not-in-view\">\n<p>Our graduates have also been employed in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>adult education<\/li>\n<li>community colleges<\/li>\n<li>K-12 public schools<\/li>\n<li>intensive English programs<\/li>\n<li>programs for refugees<\/li>\n<li>US Defense Language Institute<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-30px not-in-view\">\n<p><strong>Other EFL positions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our graduates have worked with the US Peace Corps,\u00a0US State Department English Language Fellow (ELF) Program.<\/p>\n<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-30px not-in-view\">\n<p><strong>Other ESL-related positions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our graduates have worked as curriculum specialists, test-item developers, or lexicographers with Cambridge University Press,\u00a0 Educational Testing Service (ETS), Longman, and Second Language Testing, Inc.<\/p>\n<hr role=\"separator\" class=\"hr--transparent hr--transparent-30px not-in-view\">\n<!-- shortcode-contact -->\n<div class=\"shortcode-contact\">\n    <div class=\"contact-header\">\n        <h3>Questions?
