Eligibility:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>full-time enrollment<\/li>\n<li>undergraduate or graduate<\/li>\n<li>U.S. citizen<\/li>\n<li>major or minor in criminology and criminal justice<\/li><\/ul><\/body><\/html>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- shortcode-accordion -->\n<div class=\"shortcode-accordion shortcode-accordion--closed\" style=\"position: relative;\" >\n        <a class=\"shortcode-accordion__trigger\" data-header=\"Brent Cooper Memorial Scholarship_0\" href=\"#\">\n      <div class=\"shortcode-accordion__header\">\n          <h4>Brent Cooper Memorial Scholarship <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Accordion Closed<\/span><\/h4>\n          <span class=\"shortcode-accordion__header__arrow\"><\/span>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/a>\n    <div class=\"shortcode-accordion__body\">\n        <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body>\n<p>The Brent Cooper Memorial Scholarship, United Way of Northern Arizona, and the League of Neighborhoods (representing the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association of Flagstaff, Inc., the Southside Community Association, Inc., and La Plaza Vieja Neighborhood Association, Inc.), established this scholarship to support and encourage future leaders in community policing who are working toward a degree in Criminal Justice at Northern Arizona University.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Cooper 1954-2011, a graduate of NAU, became the Chief of the Flagstaff Police Department in July 2006 after 28 years of service to the department. He served as a member of the UWNA Board of Directors from 2007 to 2011. This Fund shall be used to create a memorial scholarship in the criminology and criminal justice department to recognize the community policing efforts of the City of Flagstaff Chief of Police, Brent Cooper. This fund shall be used to provide scholarships to support students who meet the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>declare a major in criminology and criminal justice or related field<\/li>\n<li>sign a pledge they are drug free<\/li>\n<li>complete an essay on the importance of community involvement in policing efforts and\/or the most current innovative and humane methods of promoting vital and safe communities<\/li>\n<li>preference will be given to students who attended high school in Flagstaff, particularly those who grew up in the neighborhoods where Chief Cooper focused his community policing efforts: Sunnyside, La Plaza Vieja, and Southside, or preference to a student who is a current law enforcement personnel<\/li>\n<li>students that continue to meet the award criteria may reapply for this scholarship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- shortcode-accordion -->\n<div class=\"shortcode-accordion shortcode-accordion--closed\" style=\"position: relative;\" >\n        <a class=\"shortcode-accordion__trigger\" data-header=\"James L. Henry graduated from NAU in 1973 with a degree in Political Science. He was fortunate to have his G.I. Bill to pay for all of his college expenses so he could concentrate all of his time on his studies. He met other students who had to work to fulfill their educational goals. For this reason he is establishing a scholarship. He wants to see students focus as much as possible on their studies, thereby increasing the likelihood of achieving their goal of graduating. Russell and Susan met while living on campus in the SAC Dorm (now known as McConnell Hall). Russell, who was raised in Wisconsin and Colorado, transferred to NAU where he met Susan, who was born and raised in Phoenix. Russell received his B.S. in Accountancy in 1985 and Susan received her B.S. in Police Science Administration (Criminal Justice) in 1984. After graduation, they moved to Phoenix and got married in 1986. While both were working, they obtained their Master&rsquo;s Degrees from NAU. Susan earned her Master&rsquo;s in Public Administration in 1991, and Russell earned his Master&rsquo;s in Educational Leadership in 2004. Susan also earned a Law Degree from Arizona State University in 1996. Contact the department of Criminology and Criminal Justice to apply.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CJ 345 Writing Competition<\/strong> recognizes excellence in writing and depth of understanding about cultural differences. There are two writing competitions: one in the fall and the other in the spring. Awards range from $300-400. Contestants must be enrolled in CCJ 345 and have full-time status at the time of application.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fall Application Deadline: December 2<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Spring Application Deadline: May 1<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Creative and Scholarly Projects Grant<\/strong> provides financial assistance to underwrite the costs of travel or special materials needed for an independent study, undergraduate research internship, a major class project, or thesis research. Awards are based upon merit and amounts vary. Eligibility:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NAU student<\/li>\n<li>in good academic standing<\/li>\n<li>enrolled full-time<\/li>\n<li>a CCJ major or enrolled in the CCJ graduate program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Professional Development Grant<\/strong> provides travel support for attending professional conferences and criminal justice related workshops. Awards are based upon merit and amounts vary. Applications must be received at least one month before the event.
