{"id":2167,"date":"2018-07-13T16:15:22","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T16:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/knau.org\/post\/brain-food-mars-rover-digs-organic-material"},"modified":"2019-11-01T15:20:52","modified_gmt":"2019-11-01T22:20:52","slug":"brain-food-mars-rover-digs-up-organic-material-knau-arizona-public-radio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/department-astronomy-planetary-science\/brain-food-mars-rover-digs-up-organic-material-knau-arizona-public-radio\/","title":{"rendered":"Brain Food: Mars Rover Digs Up Organic Material | KNAU Arizona Public Radio"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Mars Rover Curiosity has dug up organic material in rocks just below the surface of what\u2019s believed to be an ancient Martian lake bed.<\/p>\n<p>Planetary geologist Mark Salvatore of Flagstaff says the discovery of carbon-based molecules, butane and propane, suggest they may be the result of the breakdown of larger, more complex organic molecules\u2014the kind that could be related to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese organic molecules are really the backbone to what could form life, and the fact that we found all these organic molecules implies that really the backbone and the ingredients for life are there,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Curiosity also detected methane in the Martian atmosphere. Salvatore says methane gas is commonly emitted from volcanoes, but also exhaled by living organisms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s present on Earth, mostly as a byproduct of organic life, so kind of the respiratory outputs of lots of organisms and lots of bacteria.
