Math Placement

Pilots to inform Math Placement and course pathways

In an effort to identify additional Math Placement indicators, a random selection of incoming first-year students who placed into MAT100 were allowed to enroll in MAT114, MAT108+MAT199, or MAT150 (dependent on students’ choice of major).

non-STEM students who placed into MAT100 were randomly selected to enroll in MAT114.

106

STEM degree students who placed into MAT100 were randomly selected to enroll in MAT108 + MAT199. MAT199 was designed as a supplemental support course and was required for MAT108 students in the pilot.

Preliminary data shows that a sufficient high–school cumulative GPA can be an indicator of success in MAT114/108/150.  The study will be continuing into the 2019-2020 academic year, in hopes of increasing the sample numbers, especially in MAT114.  Additionally, the MAT199 course will undergo further development and modification during the summer of 2019 under the guidance of mathematics faculty, to be ready for the fall of 2019.
