Why Our Work is Important
I have long been an advocate for women’s rights, equality, health, and safety. Learning about The Commission on the Status of Women and the work being done on campus to advance equity and inclusion for women felt like an exciting homecoming. Nelson Mandela said it best, “If you want to change the world, help the women.” I couldn’t agree more. It is an honor to serve the NAU community with my passion and talents on this Commission, contributing to our mission to create a welcoming, family friendly environment. The CSW continues to seek initiatives that raise awareness about the challenges to gender equity and create programs that contribute to innovative, tangible change. Ultimately, moving our cultural needle toward healthy, kind, and inclusive creating opportunities for success for everyone. – Heather Rist (Current Co-Chair)
I have been a member of CSW since 2014 and have seen the considerable positive impacts the commissions are able to accomplish. All of the commissions are an integral part of providing a voice for faculty and staff to institutional leadership and in creating meaningful change. Together we have more power as a group to foster a welcoming environment where diversity and gender equity are prioritized. – Samantha Clifford (Current Co-Chair).
I believe that faculty should take an active interest in their university, and I want to make sure that all of the amazing women at NAU have the opportunities and resources to be their best selves. – Dr. Karen Renner (Past Co-Chair).
I have been a part of both CSW and CED for over seven years. I realized from voicing my opinions and concerns that there were issues that I wanted to see addressed and I believe one of the best ways to do that was becoming more involved in the decision-making process. We are all busy. But to get anything done, we have to prioritize and make the time. Diversity related issues are where I set my priorities. – Debra Edgerton (Past Co-Chair).
Vision
We envision NAU as a welcoming, diverse, and family friendly community that serves as a model of gender equity.
