Join us for our science and math professional learning series!

All sessions are offered free of charge

Funding provided by the Arizona STEM Accelerator Project (ASAP)

We are excited to offer two science and two math FREE(!) professional learning opportunities to the Northern Arizona community this fall. All sessions are for current elementary and secondary science and math teachers in Northern Arizona. The sessions will be held in either Prescott or Lakeside. Please see below for descriptions for each of the sessions. Join us for all or just a selection of sessions.

Science Opportunities

Session #1: How to Assess Meaningful Science Learning Over Time (K-12) Accordion Closed

Prescott: Friday, September 13th (5-8pm) and Saturday, September 14th (9am-3pm) (Location: Yavapai Accommodation School)

Lakeside: Friday, September 27th (5-8pm) and Saturday, September 28th (9am-3pm) (Location: Blue Ridge Elementary School)

In this two-day workshop, teachers will explore how to create formative science assessments that measure students’ progress in meeting the ambitious multidimensional performance expectations found in the Next Generation Science Standards and Arizona’s own science standards. Teachers will examine how to construct assessment tasks that call on students to use – not just talk about – science ideas and determine how these tasks can support and inform phenomenon-based science instruction over time in their units.

Facilitator: Sam Severance

Math Opportunities

Session: Mathematics Beyond Numbers (K-12) Accordion Closed

Prescott: Friday, September 6th (5-8pm) and Saturday, September 7th (9am-3pm) (Location: Yavapai Accommodation School)

Lakeside: Friday, September 20th (5-8pm) and Saturday, September 21st (9am-4pm) (Location: Blue Ridge Elementary School) (FULL – REGISTRATION CLOSED)

In this two-day session, we’ll explore “Mathematics Beyond Numbers,” starting with strategies to create a sense of belonging in math classrooms, essential for transforming students’ perceptions of the subject. This foundation allows us to position students as sense makers and draw out their ideas. We’ll then shift to the pedagogical practices of noticing that support students’ ideas as assets during math instruction. The goal is to reshape how students feel, experience, and view mathematics, fostering a deeper understanding and engagement.

Travel Support

Limited travel support is available on a first come, first serve basis for Northern Arizona attendees from outside of Prescott or Lakeside. This may include mileage reimbursement and hotel rooms, as needed. If you are requesting travel support, please indicate so when you register for the course.
