{"id":10348,"date":"2026-04-07T18:21:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T18:21:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/college-health-human-services\/?p=10348"},"modified":"2026-04-07T18:22:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T18:22:58","slug":"preparing-the-next-generation-of-dementia-care-professionals-elevate-the-campaign-for-nau","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/college-health-human-services\/news\/preparing-the-next-generation-of-dementia-care-professionals-elevate-the-campaign-for-nau\/","title":{"rendered":"Preparing the next generation of dementia care professionals | Elevate, The Campaign for NAU"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" src=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/04\/IMG_2692-2048x1536-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10349\" style=\"width:509px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/04\/IMG_2692-2048x1536-1.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/04\/IMG_2692-2048x1536-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/04\/IMG_2692-2048x1536-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/04\/IMG_2692-2048x1536-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/04\/IMG_2692-2048x1536-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/04\/IMG_2692-2048x1536-1-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/04\/IMG_2692-2048x1536-1-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/04\/IMG_2692-2048x1536-1-2000x1500.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At Northern Arizona University, more than 200 students recently came together across disciplines\u2014alongside roughly 30 faculty and community partners\u2014to better understand one of the most pressing and complex health challenges facing Arizona communities: dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Interprofessional Development, Engagement, and Advancement (IDEA) Symposium on Aging and Dementia brought together NAU students from social work, psychology, nursing, nutrition, speech-language pathology, and fitness wellness across three colleges\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/college-social-behavioral-sciences\/\">Social and Behavioral Sciences<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/college-nursing\/\">Nursing<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/college-health-human-services\/\">Health and Human Services<\/a>\u2014to learn both about dementia care and each other\u2019s disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elevate.foundationnau.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/55159038710_40643dde11_6k-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1523\" style=\"width:318px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>That interdisciplinary approach reflects a growing need across Arizona, where rates of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and related dementias are rising rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arizona is experiencing one of the fastest-growing rates of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and related dementias in the country, with diagnoses increasing by roughly 33 percent between 2020 and 2025,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9013315\/\">according to the Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/a>. What\u2019s more, northern Arizona has been described as a \u201cmemory care desert,\u201d with limited access to specialized providers and support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium is designed to help address that gap by preparing students early to work collaboratively in care settings that demand it\u2014an approach that reflects&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/elevate.foundationnau.org\/stories-of-impact\/academic-excellence\/100-career-ready-initiative-equips-students-with-real-world-skills\">NAU\u2019s 100% Career Ready initiative<\/a>, which integrates real-world, interdisciplinary learning into the student experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to give students from across disciplines the opportunity to learn about one another\u2019s disciplines and how their own discipline contributes to interdisciplinary care, all in the context of aging and dementia,\u201d says Executive Director and Professor in NAU\u2019s School of Social Work Michael McCarthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe symposium is also meant to address the shortage of providers who understand dementia-related concerns and raise awareness among students about this impactful career path,\u201d McCarthy adds.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/elevate.foundationnau.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/55157757877_9fb1859c78_o-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1522\" style=\"width:333px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Throughout the day, students heard directly from individuals and families with lived experience, then worked in small, interprofessional groups to apply what they learned to real-world case studies. For many, the experience offered a deeper understanding of both the disease and the human impact behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve learned more about the caregiver perspective of dementia, and more about support systems for them, and support groups for them,\u201d says Lauryn Kelly, \u201926, a communication sciences and disorders and music double major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For others, the symposium reinforced how their chosen field connects to a broader network of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis helps us set a foundation on how we can not only prevent and manage these diseases but also how our field impacts everyone else\u2019s field,\u201d says Amria Sadikov, \u201926, a nutrition major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students also gained a clearer picture of the complexity of dementia\u2014and the level of support required for both patients and caregivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDementia can be an intense disease that needs a lot of support, advocacy, and awareness,\u201d Sadikov says. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize how many people know somebody affected by this condition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event is part of a broader effort to position both NAU and the Flagstaff community as leaders in dementia awareness and care.
