AZ\u00a0Summit is an interprofessional education\u00a0(IPE)\u00a0event that is held each\u00a0fall at\u00a0the\u00a0Phoenix Bioscience Campus\u00a0(PBC).\u00a0This event\u00a0is designed for\u00a0students across several professions.\u00a0The goal of this event is to\u00a0provide an interprofessional\u00a0educational learning activity to help students improve communication\u00a0and teamwork\u00a0skills,\u00a0develop an\u00a0understanding of other\u00a0providers’\u00a0roles, and\u00a0practice\u00a0ethical patient centered care.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year was unique for several reasons as Jess Salyers, assistant clinical professor in the NAU\u00a0Occupational\u00a0Therapy\u00a0(OT)\u00a0department,\u00a0assumed the role as the chair of the planning committee. When Dr. Salyers\u00a0stepped into\u00a0the role in the summer of 2025, she knew she could not develop a new case alone. She needed to seek expert\u00a0guidance,\u00a0and she needed OT student support.\u00a0Dr. Salyers paired up with Dr. Emily Rich, an occupational therapist and researcher in Tucson,\u00a0Arizona\u00a0to develop a case with and about individuals with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS),\u00a0and Postural Orthostatic Hypertension Syndrome (POTS).\u00a0They began working on the case outline and\u00a0identified\u00a0providers in the following professions: occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistants, nursing, and counseling.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

These expert providers developed prework specific to their health profession to help students prepare for the in-person event in November. What was critical to the development of the prework was that each provider had the positionality as an expert in their field and patients with these conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Salyers also worked with three 2nd<\/sup> year occupational therapy students in the hybrid program who matched with this project as part of a community and sustainability class. Aleena Benedict, Shaylee Cain, and Jackie Paxton conducted interviews with PA, PT, OT, Nursing, and Social Work faculty to ensure that the case was developed to meet their programs\u2019 learning outcomes.  As the AZ Summit planning committee moved forward with the case development, it ensured that individuals with complex conditions were fully integrated into every step of the redesign.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day of the event involved four structured hours for the most beneficial experience for the students.\u00a0Students from different healthcare programs were\u00a0preassigned\u00a0teams.\u00a0The event began with an ice breaker to\u00a0facilitate\u00a0communication and connection before working on\u00a0the\u00a0case.\u00a0The updated patient-provider video was played so that students could\u00a0observe\u00a0a\u00a0patient with\u00a0EDS\u00a0move and\u00a0demonstrate hypermobility,\u00a0and\u00a0answer questions from her healthcare provider. The students\u00a0practiced\u00a0notetaking\u00a0and observation skills\u00a0before\u00a0working through the student learning packet as a team which offered structured and guided\u00a0questions so that they could develop a\u00a0team-based\u00a0plan of care.\u00a0While the students were working in teams, faculty members from NAU\u2019s College of Health and Human Services,\u00a0faculty from\u00a0ASU\u2019s Nursing\u00a0program,\u00a0and\u00a0College of\u00a0Medicine and Pharmacy, and\u00a0four\u00a0patients were available\u00a0to\u00a0answer questions and provide\u00a0directions\u00a0as needed.\u00a0The event\u00a0concluded with\u00a0students asking providers and patients questions to\u00a0deepen their understanding. This\u00a0year\u2019s AZ\u00a0Summit created a safe space for\u00a0inclusiveness\u00a0among\u00a0professions\u00a0and patients.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the need for more inclusive IPEs, Dr. Salyers and Dr. Rich along with the three OT students will be preparing a retrospective Institutional Review Board (IRB) to analyze and further understand the impact of this event. The event will be represented at the 7th<\/sup> Annual <\/em>Standford Conference on Disability in Healthcare and Medicine as part of a research flash talk as part of \u201cInnovations in Advancing Disability Inclusion in Medical Education\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
