When Dr. Salyers\u00a0stepped into\u00a0the role in the summer of 2025, she knew she could not develop a new case alone. She needed to seek expert\u00a0guidance,\u00a0and she needed OT student support.\u00a0Dr. Salyers paired up with Dr. Emily Rich, an occupational therapist and researcher in Tucson,\u00a0Arizona\u00a0to develop a case with and about individuals with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS),\u00a0and Postural Orthostatic Hypertension Syndrome (POTS).\u00a0They began working on the case outline and\u00a0identified\u00a0providers in the following professions: occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistants, nursing, and counseling.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/01\/az-summit.jpg\" alt=\"AZ Summit 2025\" class=\"wp-image-10086\" style=\"width:405px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/01\/az-summit.jpg 800w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/01\/az-summit-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/316\/2026\/01\/az-summit-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>These expert&nbsp;providers developed prework specific to their health profession&nbsp;to help students prepare for the&nbsp;in-person&nbsp;event&nbsp;in&nbsp;November. The students\u00a0practiced\u00a0notetaking\u00a0and observation skills\u00a0before\u00a0working through the student learning packet as a team which offered structured and guided\u00a0questions so that they could develop a\u00a0team-based\u00a0plan of care.\u00a0While the students were working in teams, faculty members from NAU\u2019s College of Health and Human Services,\u00a0faculty from\u00a0ASU\u2019s Nursing\u00a0program,\u00a0and\u00a0College of\u00a0Medicine and Pharmacy, and\u00a0four\u00a0patients were available\u00a0to\u00a0answer questions and provide\u00a0directions\u00a0as needed.\u00a0The event\u00a0concluded with\u00a0students asking providers and patients questions to\u00a0deepen their understanding.
