Meet an Athletic Training Student

Meet Ashley, an Athletic Training student. Read on to learn more about her journey to becoming an Athletic Trainer.
When did you first learn about Athletic Training, and what interested you in the field?
I first learned about Athletic Training during my freshman year of high school. My athletic trainer at the time played a huge role in shaping my interest in the profession and is a major reason why I’m pursuing it today.
What drew me most to the field is the variability; no two days are the same. In the sports world, things can change quickly, and I enjoy the unpredictability and variety that comes with it. I love being able to support athletes through some of their toughest moments and help guide them back to their best.
What has been your favorite part of your Athletic Training journey so far?
So far, my favorite part of my Athletic Training journey has been working in a Division I setting, particularly with football and basketball. I learned so much while navigating the fast pace and chaos of the in-season environment, and those experiences have been incredibly valuable. I’m truly grateful for everything I gained during that time.
How do you hope to make an impact as an Athletic Trainer?

As an Athletic Trainer, I hope to make an impact by giving back to the profession and being a strong advocate for its growth and recognition. I want to help elevate the field and inspire more students to choose Athletic Training as their future career. If I can play a role in shaping the next generation of ATs and strengthening our profession, I’ll consider that a success.
Is there a particular setting or patient population you’re especially passionate about working with (e.g., high school sports, collegiate athletics, rehab clinic, etc.)?
I am particularly passionate about working in Division I and professional sports settings. I’ve already had the opportunity to be part of a Division I program, and I truly enjoyed my three years there. The fast pace, high standards, and competitive environment are where I feel most energized and motivated, and it’s a setting I hope to continue growing in.

What’s a fun or memorable moment from your clinical experiences?
A memorable moment from my clinical experience was when our football team clinched a win against our rivals with an interception on the very last play of the game. It was a matchup the team had been looking forward to all season and being on the sidelines to witness that kind of energy and celebration was unforgettable.
What skills have you developed during your program that you’re most proud of?
During my time in the program, I’ve developed strong triage skills and the ability to manage the flow of an athletic training room. I’ve learned to thrive in the organized chaos of a busy clinic, and I have enjoyed working alongside my preceptor to keep everything running smoothly and efficiently. These skills have really strengthened my confidence as an emerging clinician.
What advice do you have for someone just starting in the Athletic Training program?
If you’re just starting in the Athletic Training program, or thinking about entering the field, my biggest piece of advice is to get involved early. During your undergraduate years, try to become an intern with your university’s athletic training staff. My time as an intern in a Division I setting gave me valuable skills and experiences that have made a huge difference in my confidence and success as a graduate student. The earlier you immerse yourself in the environment, the more prepared you’ll feel when you officially enter the program.
