This exciting program is funded through <strong>The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Northern Arizona University, and Genentech<\/strong>. The program is a shared effort among four faculty members at NAU\u2019s Flagstaff campus: Drs. Catherine Propper, Anita Antoninka, Angelina Castagno, and Monica Brown, in collaboration with Dr. Don Robinson from Din\u00e9 College and Dr. Francisco Villa from NAU\u2013Yuma. The overarching goal is to create long-term, equity-oriented systemic change through a partnership across the three institutions by reducing racial disparities in STEM graduate id=\"block-b8c8f8c9-4410-4f49-b2b4-9aa2e070c5fe\">Families are a key stakeholder for universities, and systemic change toward greater equity must consider the role families can and should play. We propose a bilateral model of family engagement that is designed to both ensure a holistic approach to student support and leverage the expertise of families to inform faculty learning. Family and community bonds are complex and crucial to developing successful student pathways and careers for many Indigenous and Latine students. Transitions to university and graduate programs are often unknown territory and can be a source of stress and adversity for students and their families.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-99c130dd-28a3-487c-a4c4-400a7179653f\">To ensure a positive, culturally responsive community of support for NAU students, we invite parents, relatives, and friends of seniors in the program to partner in their student\u2019s pathway to success. Through in-person and live remote options, we offer a variety of opportunities to facilitate engagement among all parties.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-d9016b21-a129-4584-8f26-0f97824b5f92\">The student support networks will be invited to participate in a workshop to prepare families and participants for graduate school, pathways talks, and the summer symposium. The MITSI Community of Practice (CoP) seeks to empower institutional change that will provide knowledge and skills related to anti-racist and equity-oriented education to all NAU faculty to support all students as they move through their academic careers.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty participants will engage in a year-long program to grow their understanding of systemic racism, conscious and unconscious bias, foundational equity principles, and how their own positionality relates to teaching and mentoring students. The CoP will meet monthly and will follow a curriculum developed and facilitated by Drs. Castagno and Brown. The curriculum will focus first on self-reflection and self-examination so that STEM faculty more fully understand their own positionality and role in campus culture and climate.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the curriculum will draw on equity-oriented principles and anti-racist worldview development within the context of higher education. The MITSI program will work with STEM departments and NAU\u2019s Office of Graduate and Professional Studies to integrate different metrics into the graduate application process and train faculty on the utility of this approach.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-ed139fc6-dd23-42a3-8459-6a161abb1c62\">For example, rather than relying on traditional application metrics (such as GRE scores, letters of recommendation, etc.), we will work with the academic and graduate colleges toward implementation of new policies that require non-cognitive variables such as positive self-concept; realistic self-appraisal; understanding of systems of racism, sexism, etc.; and leadership, which have been shown to correlate with student adjustment, motivation, and success.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-3888ccfb-de38-43dd-91c6-7babb7a313f6\">Revising the graduate application review process to center non-cognitive variables will result in a more diverse pool of accepted students, which will expand access to STEM pathways among BIPOC individuals. We will model our own efforts after other successful models.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-036f1f14-8b9e-4fa2-ba40-9f51f6c56b21\">The long-term goal is to extend these revisions to all graduate admission protocols at NAU, as well as to engage in a systematic equity-oriented review of all policies that impact graduate students in STEM, such as funding distribution policies, lab assignment policies, and
