Their visit was a celebration of both generosity and wisdom, as Steve shared personal insights from his extraordinary career and commemorated the couple’s transformational gift to NAU. This landmark contribution will elevate engineering education and innovation across Arizona for generations to come. More than a visit, it was a moment of inspiration—one that left a lasting impact on students, faculty, staff, and the Flagstaff community.

Here are five life-changing lessons Sanghi shared during his visit:

1. Leadership Is Inherent. Management Can Be Learned

Sanghi distinguished between two often-confused concepts: leadership and management. He reminded us that leadership isn’t about titles or authority—it’s about vision, integrity, and the ability to inspire. While management can be taught, true leadership begins with character.

2. Creativity, Curiosity, and Perseverance Are Keys to Success

Sanghi emphasized the importance of nurturing creativity, a quest for knowledge, and having the grit to keep going, no matter the obstacles. “Never, ever, ever give up,” he said. “I certainly never did.”

3. College Teaches More Than Academics

Beyond technical knowledge, Sanghi urged students to embrace the broader lessons college offers: teamwork, communication, personal finance, and cross-cultural understanding. He especially encouraged learning a foreign language for business—his pick: Chinese.

4. Trust Is Fragile—Guard It Well

Trust, Sanghi explained, is difficult to build and easy to destroy. He offered a powerful metaphor: “When you are successful, look out the window and praise your team. When you fail, look in the mirror and ask what you could’ve done better.” In this simple metaphor,

Sanghi shared the essence of ethical leadership: trust is fragile, but humility is the foundation.

5. Be a Lifelong Learner

Finally, Sanghi encouraged everyone to commit to daily learning. Even a failure, he said, is a form of progress if you take away a lesson from it. “Stay curious about the world around you,” he urged, noting that even on tough days, learning what doesn’t work moves you forward.

Steve Sanghi is a visionary engineer, executive, and philanthropist best known for his tenure as CEO and Executive Chair of Microchip Technology, a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors. Over his decades-long career, Sanghi turned Microchip into a global powerhouse, earning a reputation for resilience, innovation, and principled leadership.

The Sanghis have a long-standing relationship with NAU, including Steve’s volunteer ambassadorship on the NAU Foundation Board. In October 2024, Steve and Maria Sanghi generously donated $10 million, renaming the college to the Steve Sanghi College of Engineering. Their gift comes at a pivotal time, as growth in the semiconductor industry demands a strong pipeline of talent from colleges and universities, particularly in Arizona. On April 25, 2025, the college hosted a Naming Celebration to honor his impact and celebrate this profound moment in the college’s history.

Northern Arizona University was honored to welcome visionary tech leader and philanthropist Steve Sanghi, his wife Maria, and their family to campus on April 24–25, 2025.
