Expanding global opportunities with Hochschule Biberach

NAU and the Sanghi College of Engineering welcomed distinguished guests from Hochschule Biberach (HBC), a leading applied sciences university in Germany, earlier this month to celebrate a new academic partnership. The delegation included Rector Prof. Matthias Bahr, faculty members, and several students, who spent the day engaging with NAU students, faculty, and staff to explore shared areas of interest and potential collaboration.

The visit culminated in a formal signing ceremony between NAU President José Luis Cruz Rivera and Rector Prof. Matthias Bahr. The two leaders signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), establishing the foundation for future academic and research opportunities between the institutions.

“This partnership opens new possibilities for our students and faculty to collaborate internationally and address pressing global challenges,” said President Cruz Rivera. “Together, NAU and HBC will develop innovative ways to prepare the next generation of engineers and scientists.”

While still in the exploratory phase, the partnership will focus on fields where both universities bring strong expertise, including civil engineering, environmental engineering, bioengineering, and biotechnology. Leaders at both institutions envision a range of opportunities, from student and faculty exchanges to collaborative research projects that address issues such as sustainability, infrastructure, and human health.

For students, partnerships like this expand the classroom experience well beyond the walls of NAU. International collaboration allows future engineers to gain firsthand understanding of how global perspectives, cultural contexts, and diverse approaches shape problem-solving in the modern world. As engineering challenges from climate change to biomedical innovation become increasingly global in scope, exposure to different systems and ways of thinking is essential preparation for successful careers.

Faculty and staff also stand to benefit from new opportunities for research and teaching collaborations, as well as deeper engagement with an international community of scholars. The signing of this MOU underscores NAU’s broader commitment to building global networks that support discovery, innovation, and student success.

Hochschule Biberach is recognized in Germany and abroad for its excellence in applied sciences and its strong connections to industry. Located in the state of Baden-Württemberg, the university focuses on practical, career-oriented education with particular strength in engineering, architecture, and business management. HBC emphasizes sustainability and interdisciplinary approaches, ensuring that its graduates are prepared to address complex, real-world challenges.

The visit to NAU marks the beginning of what both universities expect will be a long and fruitful partnership. As HBC shared in their own announcement: “We look forward to the many opportunities for exchange and collaboration this partnership will bring.”

With this new international connection, SCE continues to expand its impact—providing students with experiences that prepare them to thrive in an interconnected world while fostering solutions to challenges that transcend borders.
