$1M NSF Grant Bolsters Engineering Education in the Southwestern Region for Hispanic & Latino Students

Dr. Cornel Ciocanel’s team is addressing the challenges students in Yuma and Imperial Counties face in pursuing and completing postsecondary engineering degrees. The recently awarded NSF grant will create instructional opportunities for educators, counselors, and families to better support students aspiring to careers in engineering.

The team will offer workshops to high school and middle school teachers and counselors, training them on the requirements for students to successfully enroll in postsecondary engineering degrees. Additionally, ACUE training will be provided to math and physics faculty at Arizona Western College and Imperial Valley College to enhance teaching effectiveness and student outcomes, addressing the common issue of students dropping out of engineering degree pathways due to deficiencies in math and physics.

Students who choose to pursue their BS in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) at NAU may also be eligible for up to 10K per year to cover unmet financial needs related to the cost of school through the S-STEM Scholarship Program. To learn more about the BSME program, please visit our website.
