Superior leadership skills give FCB students a significant boost in their business careers. The BLP helps students gain these skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics. Regardless of their personal goals, understanding how to lead will help our students achieve success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leadership is the art and science of getting others to do what they would otherwise not do. Over the course of three years (beginning with the sophomore year) the BLP helps students learn to lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">BLP structure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2018\/04\/BLP_TheProcess-400x186.png\" alt=\"Arrow graphic that shows progression of the Business Leadership Program from year 1 to year 2 to year 3\" class=\"wp-image-324\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The BLP is an intensive,<strong> three-year program<\/strong> designed to help students learn to listen, understand, and persuade. We built the program around activities including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-6bef6d5c-d9bd-4c3b-82ef-4b8b39c43310\"><li><strong>Structured learning<\/strong> activities that help students gain core skills<\/li><li><strong>Personal reflection<\/strong> journals that deepen students learning and self-understanding<\/li><li><strong>Interactions with industry leaders<\/strong> that help students learn leadership from those who effectively lead.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The program also helps students become ethical leaders. In each year students improve their understanding of basic ethical principles and how they apply to leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who successfully complete the Business Leadership Program will be able to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-bcfc2c03-4013-4ada-a4de-e4c019b01694\"><li>Apply appropriate <strong>active listening <\/strong>techniques<\/li><li><strong>Understand<\/strong> others\u2019 motivations and perspectives<\/li><li><strong>Persuade<\/strong> others through crafting and delivering effective messages verbally and in writing<\/li><li><strong>Apply leadership<\/strong> skills ethically and effectively<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure  class=\"nau-article-nice-blockquote no-photo\" data-repository=\"\">\n            <div class=\"text\">\n            <blockquote>\n                &#8220;To lead you must have followers. True listening is not easy; listening requires blocking out life\u2019s ambient noise and solely focusing on the other person. The goal of Year 1 is for students to become authentic, effective, listeners. Most of us find it difficult to see the world through someone else\u2019s eyes, but this ability is essential to leadership. Year 2 focuses on helping students gain understanding. In Year 3 students learn the art of persuasion.
