I\u2019ve found that one of the best ways to become a successful writer is to have work that\u2019s published online. The good news is that NAU\u2019s Climate Action Committee is making it easy to start establishing yourself in the writing world\u2014they\u2019re looking for volunteer writers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Climate Action Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to their website, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/nau.edu\/nauclimateactioncommittee\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Climate Action Committee at NAU<\/a> is a student-led organization that \u201caims to provide an avenue for students to get involved with tangible, visible, and research-based campus sustainability initiatives that are hands-on and engage the wider community.\u201d When asked about their mission statement, founder <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.nau.edu\/departments?id=10228&amp;person=pje53\">Phoenix Eskridge-Aldama<\/a> elaborates on each of the committee\u2019s central values:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>Tangibility<\/strong>: \u201cOur core focus is to engage in projects that have a measurable impact on our community&#8217;s emission outputs.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Visibility<\/strong>: \u201cWe like to make changes that students can actually see and experience.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Research-based<\/strong>: \u201cWe have a great mix of learning and exchanging research skills among members since the club has expanded to include both graduate and undergraduate students from a variety of backgrounds.\u201c<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are some of the projects the Climate Action Committee has completed and is working on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>energy efficiency upgrades like installing thermal window films on the Physical Science Building<\/li><li>street adoption<\/li><li>an initiative to help students get free bikes<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The committee meets biweekly on Mondays from 6\u20137 p.m. in-person and via Zoom!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why write for the Climate Action Committee?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you write for an NAU advocacy group like the Climate Action Committee, you get more than just writing experience\u2014you gain volunteer experience too. And since you and the committee members are all part of NAU, communication is easy. You can chat with the committee via email or through their handy <a href=\"https:\/\/join.slack.com\/t\/gsgclimateaction\/shared_invite\/zt-24py7wq1h-FJnmRkgonVXk1qw4i3Aa1Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Slack<\/a> channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to experience and ease of access, this is also a great opportunity to learn how to write for social media. This specific committee happens to have its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nauclimateactioncommittee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a> profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advocacy writing can improve your portfolio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Being an advocate requires empathy\u2014and so does being a writer.&nbsp;Writers gain empathy by learning about the issues we are writing about.&nbsp;When you write for an advocacy group like the Climate Action Committee, you\u2019re able to learn more about the topic (in this case, eco-friendliness and climate change) over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, you may become an experienced climate advocate writer. This can open you up to many different jobs you may otherwise not have been qualified for. For example, if you volunteer as a writer for the Climate Action Committee, you may later qualify for <a href=\"https:\/\/konnant.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainability writer<\/a> roles such as an environmental report writer or a <a href=\"https:\/\/greenerwords.com\/esg-report-writer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainability report writer<\/a>. In other words, the more \u201cniches\u201d or topics you can become well-versed in, the more job opportunities you can be considered for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Apply as a writer for the Climate Action Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to apply to be a Climate Action Committee Volunteer Writer (CACVW) at NAU!
