The original cast of the Broadway musical RENT, 1993.<\/em><\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/broadway\/stars\/jonathan-larson\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Larson<\/a> wrote the music, lyrics, and book for <em>RENT<\/em> with the goal of \u201cbringing musical theater to the MTV generation.\u201d Larson was a playwright who often explored topics such as homophobia and multiculturalism within his work. He also wrote <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mtishows.com\/tick-tick-boom\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Tick, Tick&#8230; BOOM!<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>RENT <\/em>was born in 1988 by playwright Billy Aronson as a musical based on the opera <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eno.org\/operas\/la-boheme\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>La Boh\u00e8me<\/em><\/a>, which depicted the Bohemian lifestyle in the early 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. Larson collaborated with him and suggested that the play be set in the East Village to focus on poverty, drag queens, and the punk scene. The name \u201cRENT\u201d was chosen because it means a fixed payment, but it also represents something that has been torn apart.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show opened in the off-Broadway theater New York Theatre Workshop in 1996. Larson tragically died of an aortic dissection the night before and would not see the great success that came from it. However, he knew from the start that it was \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161028202525\/http:\/\/www.billyaronson.com\/musicals.php#rent\" target=\"_blank\">incredible<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>RENT<\/em> tells the story of young artists struggling to survive as creatives in New York City under the shadow of HIV\/AIDS.
