Supervisor of the Year Award

Each fall, NAU recognizes an outstanding supervisor of student employees with the Supervisor Of The Year (SOTY) Award.

The SOTY (pronounced soh–tee) winner is chosen from nominations submitted by student employees, colleagues, and/or supervisors. Nomination criteria are based on best practices for supervising student employees, adapted from A Good Job: Campus Employment as a High-Impact Practice (Stylus Publishing, 2018).

2020-2021 Supervisor of the Year

Congratulations to Rebecca Trujillo with Transfer & Online Connections for being selected as this year’s Supervisor of the Year!

2021-21 SOTY Award recipient, Rebecca Trujillo, with the numerous student employees who nominated her
I have such an amazing team. Each mentor shows exemplary dedication, drive, and sincerity in their desire to perform their mentoring duties and supporting other online students.

Rebecca mentioned that one of her favorite aspects of working with the Jacks Online mentors is their virtual staff meetings. The team shares many moments of fun and laughing together, as well as sincere and genuine concerns or feelings to continue supporting each other, as they grow both as a team and as individuals. Rebecca values how open and honest her mentors are, and appreciates how they inspire her to find ways to support and highlight the dedicated work they produce.

I value the opportunity I get to invest in my mentors’ professional development and the ability to get to know each one. I feel passionate about investing in each mentor; I have seen how that impact is far-reaching, within the NAU community and in the lives they touch everywhere.

We also wanted to highlight some of the wonderful things that Rebecca’s student employees had to say about her, both on the Transfer & Online Connections blog and below.

What Rebecca’s student employees said

Rebecca knows that, as a non-traditional student, I have a lot of work and studying to do, along with my student employment position. She is genuinely interested and encouraging when it comes to my studies. If my schoolwork ever conflicts with my student job, she is always willing to work things out and to find solutions. Rebecca is always kind and positive when we communicate and regularly asks what she can do to help me improve myself, both professionally and personally to improve.

Rebecca is available to all questions & requests. She not only helps with our questions as mentors but also assists us to find answers for our mentees. Rebecca is upbeat, personable, and professional in all interactions I’ve had with her. Even though everything has been virtual this year, she has gone out of her way to make us feel connected to each other, even though we’ve never met in person.

Rebecca is all about providing professional development opportunities for the team to engage in and to show us how our responsibilities will affect our performance in our future positions. She works with each of us to determine what we want to work on and improve upon and encourages us to find opportunities to gain those new skills.

Rebecca is honestly the most caring, compassionate, and relatable supervisor I have ever had. She has proven, time and time again, to be knowledgeable (and will go above and beyond to find needed answers), responsive, communicative, and understanding of all of the individual situations that arise. I truly believe that Rebecca executes her position beyond what is required and is the driving force behind our team. Daily, we are empowered by her leadership, touched by her authentic kindness, and motivated by her dedication to serving other students at NAU.

Honorable Mentions

Although there is only one winner, we wanted to recognize the other rock star supervisors who are making a difference at NAU and making their student employees’ experiences meaningful. All supervisors nominated are to receive an official certificate for their efforts.
