American Red Cross Certification classes

Take a training course to learn life-saving skills from our American Red Cross-certified instructors. Learn more about other certification courses offered by the Fitness program.

While we work through the current health situation, the American Red Cross has provided discounts on their fully-online courses. From First Aid/CPR to safety training for swim coaches, there’s something for everybody to learn while at home.

Land-based Courses

We offer several different courses, depending on your certification need. All courses lead to a certification through the American Red Cross with a validity period of 2 years (provided the participant passes the final written exam with an 80% or higher).

CPRO, AED and First Aid Accordion Open

This course is designed for individuals with a duty to respond to emergencies. Instructors use a combination of discussions, videos and hands-on training throughout the course to help you learn how to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, respiratory and first aid emergencies in adults, children and infants. All of our courses are offered in the blended learning format (learn more below).

  • Prerequisites: 15 years old+ on or before the final scheduled course section

CPR, AED and First Aid Accordion Closed

This course is designed for individuals who would like to learn how to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. All of our courses are offered in the blended learning format (learn more below).

This course is designed to give participants the opportunity to review course content in a formal class setting. Participants are expected to come to the course with strong content knowledge.

  • Prerequisites: must possess a current American Red Cross CPRO/AED/First Aid certification (those without a current certification must take a full course)

First Aid Accordion Closed

This course is designed to give participants the opportunity to learn how to respond to common first aid emergencies, including: burns; cuts; head, neck and back injuries and more. All courses are offered in a blended learning format.

Water-based Courses

Our water-based courses meet national standards for lifeguarding and instructing through the American Red Cross. All courses lead to a certification through the ARC with a validity period of 2 years (provided the participant passes the final written exam(s) with an 80% or higher).

Lifeguard Training Accordion Open

The purpose of the lifeguarding course is to teach the knowledge and skills needed to help prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. This includes land and water rescue skills as well as first aid and CPR/AED. All courses are offered in a blended learning format.

Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Accordion Closed

The purpose of the LGI course is to train instructors to teach the basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses, CPR for the Professional Rescuer courses, CPR for Lay Responder courses and courses about AEDs and First Aid.

Note: Instructor-level courses require an additional fee of $35 paid directly to the American Red Cross (your instructor will provide you with this link before course starts). 

  • Prerequisites: 17 years old+ on the final scheduled course date, current ARC certification in Lifeguarding/CPR/AED and First Aid, pass precourse skills session (2 rescue skill scenarios that test lifeguarding and CPR knowledge)

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Accordion Closed

The purpose of the WSI course is to train participants to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program, including Parent/Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics and the Learn-to-Swim program. All courses are offered in a blended learning format.

Blended learning courses

We are happy to announce our use of the American Red Cross’ online blended learning classroom. For these courses, there will be a required online component and an in-person requirement. You must successfully complete both components in order to complete the course and receive a certification. For questions about blended learning, please contact WallAquaticCenter@nau.edu.

CPRO or CPR/AED/First Aid Blended Learning Accordion Open

Registration for these courses will close 1 week prior to the course date. Registrants will receive an email containing the course link, online access and information about the in-person certification class. The online component must be completed before the in-person training session. Find more information about the online classroom.

Lifeguard Training and WSI Blended Learning Accordion Closed

Registrants will receive the course link and information upon successful completion of the prerequisite skills session during the first meeting of the course. Participants will have 1 week to complete the required online content; this content must be completed before the three in-person class sessions. Find more information about the online classroom.
