{"id":11925,"date":"2024-11-14T15:15:48","date_gmt":"2024-11-14T22:15:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nau.edu\/campus-living\/?page_id=11925"},"modified":"2026-03-16T23:41:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T23:41:11","slug":"black-culture-focused-housing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/campus-living\/focused-housing\/black-culture-focused-housing\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Culture Focused Housing"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Black Culture Focused Housing<\/h1>\n<h2>Explore traditional and contemporary aspects of Black intellectual, social, and cultural life<\/h2>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">Black Culture Focused Housing will opened Fall 2025 in one wing of the Mountain View Campus Living Community (CLC). <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What is Black Culture Focused Housing?<\/h3>\n<p>Black Culture Focused Housing aims to foster a strong sense of belonging and connection through living and learning<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-12616 size-square-image\" src=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/campus-living\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/381\/9797_black_student_convocation_20230511-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Black student convocation\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/381\/9797_black_student_convocation_20230511-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/381\/9797_black_student_convocation_20230511-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> together while exploring traditional and contemporary aspects of Black intellectual, social, and cultural life.<\/p>\n<p>Black Culture Focused Housing includes the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Social connections with others who identify as and\/or are interested in learning more about Black culture, heritage, and lived experiences<\/li>\n<li>Network of Black-identifying participants, staff, alumni, and peer support providing learning opportunities, personal and professional development,\u202fand mentorship<\/li>\n<li>Dynamic programming in the living environment such as:\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Cultural dinners<\/li>\n<li>Guest speakers on history, culture, politics, and current lived experiences of Black populations<\/li>\n<li>Social and cultural events, including visual and performing arts, music, and dances<\/li>\n<li>Hair styling partnerships with the Black Student Union<\/li>\n<li>Educational programming onsite and through field trips<\/li>\n<li>Leadership development opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Academic support and study groups<\/li>\n<li>Career path and graduate school exploration\/preparation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>3-4 signature events per academic year planned with community member input<\/li>\n<li>Community gathering room in the wing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Collaborative effort<\/h4>\n<p>Parris Adams, BJ Piper, and the BSU executive team demonstrated courageous leadership and a strong commitment to amplifying student voices after a traumatic community experience. Their advocacy inspired the creation of this community.
