Each year, Health Promotion surveys NAU students about their health and wellness.\u00a0 The outcomes of these surveys are used to create Health Promotion’s annual Social Norms Campaigns, which you may have seen around campus.<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\nSocial norm campaigns use social norms, <\/em>or the statistics you see on each poster, to challenge flawed perceptions and increase knowledge about actual NAU student behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n <\/body><\/html>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n \n

\n \n\n\nSocial norms are customs and beliefs accepted by a group that guide people’s behavior. These norms are perceptions, <\/em>or thoughts and ideas of what “normal” behaviors are. People often adopt an “everyone else is doing it” mentality based on their peers and other people around them.<\/p>\n
Many times these perceptions are incorrect. For example, one perception is everyone at NAU smokes pot. In reality 80% of NAU students reported that they did NOT use marijuana in the last 30 days. This statistic came from the 2017 AZIHE survey conducted on campus. \n \n\n\nAll surveys are kept anonymous and students are asked to answer truthfully to ensure honest, accurate responses.<\/p>\n
Every year the Health Promotion team collaborates with NAU’s assessment office to distribute the following surveys:<\/p>\n

- The American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA) survey, a nationally recognized research survey aimed to collect data about students’ health habits, behaviors, and perceptions<\/li>\n
- The Arizona Institutions of Higher Education (AZIHE) Network survey, which assesses Arizona students’ behaviors and perceptions surrounding alcohol, other drugs, and violence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Each survey is sent to a random and representative sample of NAU students. The sample is carefully selected to represent the population of NAU students as a whole. The sample size is indicated on each poster (n = #). Each statistic we have is true and representative of the NAU student body. Even if some people are not completely truthful, results are usually accurate within a small margin of error (only a few percentage points).<\/p>\n
