Hi! I have been accepted to NAU and I have celiac disease and food allergies. How can I speak with a dietitian to help me find safe eating options on campus?
Hi! Congratulations on your acceptance to NAU!
Our dining halls easily cater to common food allergies. Both of the two main dining halls on campus, the Hot Spot and the Dubois Center, have designated areas (Simple Servings) where you can get food that fits to your diet. Simple Servings provides a variety of options that do not contain shellfish, milk, wheat, gluten, soy, eggs, peanuts, and tree nuts. Requesting custom-made, gluten-free options is also a good way to get the food you need. The dining halls and restaurants on campus also have plenty of foods that don’t contain gluten at all. Rice and potatoes are a common substitute for gluten-containing foods, and the dining halls always have one or the other to offer daily.
All foods in the dining halls are labeled to indicate if they contain any of the eight most common allergens. This information is also available at the Campus Dining website.
As for speaking to a dietitian, at the beginning of each semester students with special food needs are encouraged to sign up for a “Dining Tour” with the dietitian. During the tour the special food options and labeling systems are shown and explained. Also, students are introduced to dining managers so that they will know who to speak with if they have a question about a particular food. To sign up for a tour, send an email to our campus dietitian.
Campus Health Services also offers one-on-one nutrition counseling. We have a registered dietitian that covers many concerns including weight management, eating disorders, sports, fitness, illness, wellness, and of course, food allergies. To schedule an appointment with the dietitian on campus, you can call 928-523-2131 or request an appointment online.
Don’t forget to check out the Campus Dining Mobile App! This app can help you find vegan, gluten-free, and vegetarian options all around campus.
Eating healthy on campus is as easy as (gluten-free) pie! Bon Appetit!
