{"id":1662,"date":"2018-10-19T11:28:35","date_gmt":"2018-10-19T18:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/aztrans\/?p=1662"},"modified":"2019-08-20T11:48:18","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T18:48:18","slug":"sinagua-middle-school-outreach-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/aztrans\/sinagua-middle-school-outreach-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinagua Middle School Outreach Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>AZTrans In-Classroom K-8 Transportation Engineering Outreach Event at Sinagua Middle School<\/h1>\n<p><strong>AZ<\/strong><em>Trans <\/em>faculty Brendan Russo and undergraduate research assistant Emmanuel James presented an introduction to transportation engineering to two classes of 7<sup>th<\/sup> and 8<sup>th<\/sup> grade students (~60 students total) at Sinagua Middle School in Flagstaff, AZ on October 19<sup>th<\/sup>, 2018. The students were enrolled in introductory middle school engineering courses, and the <strong>AZ<\/strong><em>Trans<\/em> presentation included an introduction to the different disciplines of civil engineering, details on the type of work transportation engineers do, and included an in-class activity. For the activity, students worked in groups to calculate their reaction time, and using this value, they calculated the required stopping sight distance if they were designing a high-speed roadway.
