AZTrans In-Classroom K-8 Transportation Engineering Outreach Event at Sinagua Middle School
AZTrans faculty Brendan Russo and undergraduate research assistant Emmanuel James presented an introduction to transportation engineering to two classes of 7th and 8th grade students (~60 students total) at Sinagua Middle School in Flagstaff, AZ on October 19th, 2018. The students were enrolled in introductory middle school engineering courses, and the AZTrans presentation included an introduction to the different disciplines of civil engineering, details on the type of work transportation engineers do, and included an in-class activity. For the activity, students worked in groups to calculate their reaction time, and using this value, they calculated the required stopping sight distance if they were designing a high-speed roadway. Students were also introduced to the basic concepts of traffic signal operations.
