As a member of the Tri-University Task Force (NAU, ASU, and UA), NAU is leading an evaluation of Kimley-Horn and Associates’ Smart Priority technology, funded by the Maricopa Association of Governments and installed at intersections in the City of Mesa, Arizona and Maricopa County. The product is a software module that interfaces directly between the Fire Department’s Computer Aided Dispatch system and the City’s/County’s central traffic management system to provide emergency vehicle preemptions to traffic signals based upon the GPS location of emergency vehicles with respect to geofenced signalized intersection approaches. The product will be evaluated on its impact on emergency vehicle travel times in various regards, as well as ease of installation, operation, and management of the system.
