AZTrans Exhibit at the 2017 NAU Science and Engineering Day
AZTrans operated an exhibit at the NAU Science and Engineering Day, which was part of the Flagstaff Festival of Science. The transportation focused exhibit had equipment set up to show how traffic signal systems detect vehicles and efficiently move traffic through intersections, as well as a computer showing how traffic simulation software is used to analyze signal timing before it’s implemented in the field. Additionally, two traffic-related games were setup for children ages K-8 to play; one where they could create their own traffic signal timing plans and one which illustrated the dangers of distracted driving. Over 100 students and members of the public interacted with the exhibit (which was staffed by faculty Brendan Russo, graduate students Sam Taylor and Cris Aguilar, and undergraduate student Emmanuel James) and had a chance to learn what’s behind the scenes of the transportation systems they encounter every day.
