The pandemic led to a rise in mental health issues on campus and throughout the globe. However, the stigma attached to struggles with mental health keeps most students silent from acknowledging their issues or seeking assistance. Things Not Seen provides a space for students to express and engage with grief, loss, hope, and the struggle for self-acceptance through the creative arts.

“Things Not Seen was created to take advantage of a media-driven society where visual images can give voice to current topics and issue-driven subjects,” said Debra Edgerton, an assistant professor in the School of Art. “Artworks were created through an assignment-driven focus on mental health and an end goal of students seeing an application of classroom assignments into a transferable end product.”

Edgerton and NAU Art Museums’ senior curator, Ty Miller, adjudicated student works for artist inclusion and venue selection.
