If you don\u2019t know what those are, please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nau.edu\/its\/help\/\">contact ITS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: If you are not connected to the NAU WiFi, you must use the <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/its\/remote-services\/\">NAU VPN<\/a> in order to access Monsoon.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Opening a Terminal<\/h3>\n<p>The method of opening a terminal will vary depending on your operating system.<\/p>\n<!-- shortcode-accordion -->\n<div class=\"shortcode-accordion shortcode-accordion--closed\" style=\"position: relative;\" >\n        <a class=\"shortcode-accordion__trigger\" data-header=\"Windows_0\" href=\"#\">\n      <div class=\"shortcode-accordion__header\">\n          <h4>Windows <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Accordion Closed<\/span><\/h4>\n          <span class=\"shortcode-accordion__header__arrow\"><\/span>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/a>\n    <div class=\"shortcode-accordion__body\">\n        <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body>\n<p>In recent years, Microsoft has been developing an application called <em>Windows Terminal<\/em> to bring a feature-rich terminal to Windows. Modern versions of Windows come with Windows Terminal pre-installed. Regardless, opening a terminal in Linux will vary depending on your desktop environment (Gnome, KDE, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>For most major desktop environments, you can hit your <em>Super<\/em> key (sometimes referred to as the <em>Windows<\/em> or <em>Start <\/em>key) and type &ldquo;Terminal&rdquo;, and your list of terminals should show up.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3>Starting an SSH Connection<\/h3>\n<p>In Windows, Mac, and Linux, connecting to Monsoon is as simple as opening a terminal and using the <em>ssh<\/em> command to connect to monsoon:<\/p>\n<p><code>ssh [UID]@monsoon.hpc.nau.edu<\/code><\/p>\n<p>For example, someone with the NAU User ID of <span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: monospace; border: 1px solid; border-radius: 4px; padding: 0px 4px 0px; border-color: #BBBBBB;\">abc123<\/span> would connect to Monsoon using the command:<\/p>\n<p><code>ssh abc123@monsoon.hpc.nau.edu<\/code><\/p>\n<p><em>Note: If you are a classroom Monsoon user, you <strong>MUST<\/strong> replace <span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: monospace; border: 1px solid; border-radius: 4px; padding: 0px 4px 0px; border-color: #BBBBBB;\">monsoon<\/span> with <span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: monospace; border: 1px solid; border-radius: 4px; padding: 0px 4px 0px; border-color: #BBBBBB;\">rain<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"529\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-landscape-image wp-image-3271 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/208\/Screenshot-2024-01-19-151429.png\" alt=\"Terminal SSH Demo\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/208\/Screenshot-2024-01-19-151429.png 529w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/208\/Screenshot-2024-01-19-151429-300x85.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re first logging into a remote server using SSH, as an extra step of precaution, the client displays the following message: \u201c<em>the authenticity of the host cannot be established<\/em>\u201d to ensure that the remote server you are connecting to is correct.
