Parents, spouses & FERPA continued

Always verify the identity of the person requesting information.

  • If in person, ask for a picture ID
  • If you are releasing information over the phone, exercise caution and make a reasonable effort to authenticate the caller
  • Avoid faxing or emailing printed information: Faxes and emails are considered to be less secure than conventional mail
  • Exercise caution if you feel you must fax or email records
  • Adhere to NAU’s Data Classification and Handling Policy

You have the right and responsibility to deny requests for information if the requester is unauthorized.

  •  It is illegal to share education records with anyone other than the student, someone whom the student has authorized in writing to receive the records, or those who have legitimate education interest
